What is Person-Centered Care? True Person-Centered Care can best be described as care centered around the resident. At Cedarhurst Assisted Living and Memory Care, we understand that respect and understanding is the key to unlocking true Person-Centered Care.

Four core values can be described as:

  • Valuing people with dementia and those who care for them
  • Treating people as individuals
  • Looking at the world from the perspective of the person with dementia
  • A positive social environment in which the person living with dementia can experience relative wellbeing.

Person-Centered Care is best described as care centered around the resident. This means our team gets to know who our residents and their families are and what each resident finds most fulfilling. Before they were diagnosed how late did they sleep in? What time of day did they shower? Do they like to be outdoors? What is their favorite snack?  Knowing these things, Cedarhurst communities empower each resident to make their own choices leading to genuine fulfillment every day.

By allowing our residents the freedom to make choices regarding what time they wake up in the morning, the activities they participate in, etc., we help them live their lives to the fullest every day.  When done correctly, this can make a world of difference for the residents who live in our community.

In our Cedarhurst Memory Care communities, we begin with employee training. Every Cedarhurst employee participates in The Advanced Person-Centered Dementia Care Certificate program through the Alzheimer’s Association, St. Louis Chapter.  This 12-hour training covers everything from the basics of dementia, to understanding behavior, to how to best handle dining, bathing and activities and everything in between. In this course we learn to improve effective communication. Some effective methods are, listening carefully, keep language simple, help fill in the blanks, give compliments, ask opinions, be sincere, use positive language, rely on humor about yourself and never argue. During training staff are immersed in real life scenarios, educating the team on how to understand and prevent negative “behaviors” before they occur.
