TOPEKA, KS (SEPTEMBER 8, 2026) – Cedarhurst Senior Living is excited to announce the full opening of 34 new Independent Living Cottages at Cedarhurst of Topeka, marking the completion of a major expansion designed to meet the evolving needs of Topeka’s growing population of older adults.
Construction on the cottages began in Spring 2025, and the first residents are now moving into their new homes. The addition brings Independent Living to the Cedarhurst of Topeka campus alongside its existing Assisted Living and Memory Care options, creating a continuum of care that allows residents to enjoy an independent lifestyle today with additional support available on campus should their needs change in the future.
With Topeka’s senior population expected to grow by more than 18% over the next five years, Cedarhurst sees an increasing need for living options that reflect what today’s older adults, including the growing baby boomer generation, want from their next chapter. For many, that means right-sizing from a longtime home into a space that offers greater convenience and less maintenance without giving up privacy, independence or a sense of community.
The new Independent Living Cottages are designed for older adults who value privacy, independence and the ease of low-maintenance living. Each cottage features a spacious two-bedroom floor plan with zero-step entry, walk-in closets, full-sized kitchen appliances, a laundry room with washer and dryer, private garage with an electric vehicle outlet, covered patio and a gas fireplace.
Cottage residents also have access to a variety of amenities designed to make it easy to stay active and connected. A dedicated clubhouse offers a daily continental breakfast and weekly three-course menu, while additional amenities include a putting green, gym, bocce court, shuffleboard court and dog park. Residents can also take advantage of programs, therapy services and transportation options available across the Cedarhurst of Topeka campus.
“We often see older adults first consider senior living when a change in health forces the conversation and requires them to move quickly. We wanted to turn that timeline around,” said Almir Sajtovic, President of Cedarhurst Senior Living. “These cottages give older adults another option earlier in their journey, when they can fully embrace all that their senior years have to offer. These cottages provide freedom from household demands, but just as importantly, they offer connection, friendship and a genuine sense of community, with people to share life with and something to look forward to each day. That’s what the future of senior living should be: a proactive move toward a fuller life, not always a response to an immediate need.”
The addition of Independent Living creates a more complete senior living campus at Cedarhurst of Topeka, giving residents greater choice and flexibility as their needs and preferences evolve. Together, the Independent Living Cottages, Assisted Living and Memory Care offerings provide a
continuum of options on one campus, allowing residents to focus on the lifestyle that fits them today with added peace of mind for the future.
