Home for the Holidays
There’s no place like home for the holidays. November and December are somewhat of special edition type months around our senior living communities as we deck the halls from floor to floor and room to room with festive holiday décor. The record player in the lobby fills the building with a subtle background of Christmas jingles that’s just enough to get everyone humming the same joyful tunes. Our Christmas tree glistens from dusk to dawn as all are greeted by its warm lights and blissful presence when entering through our main entrance from the chilly outdoors. The beauty in this community centerpiece reminds us all daily that it’s not what’s under the tree that matters, but rather who’s gathered around it.
The holiday season, however, would not quite be the same without activities planned to match the season. Upstairs, our ladies have been gathering throughout the weeks in our cozy activities room, making crafts from Christmas cards to cinnamon ornaments to hang on our many trees you will find throughout the building. Craft time is a fun time for many of our residents as memory making occurs easiest with the help of smiles, laughter, and the good company of dear friends. A short elevator ride down two floors will lead you to sounds of classic holiday movies filling the halls from our movie theater. This month, some of our “Saturday Matinee” and “Sunday Showtime” movie favorites included, “The Man Who Came to Dinner”, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, “A Christmas Story”, “Home Alone”, and “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Our Memory Care had a sweet, sugary time making gingerbread houses that looked good enough to eat! Whether it’s crafts, food, music, movies, or games, our community has been filled with the jolliest holiday cheer.
Adding to the festivities, one of our favorite events each year is our family holiday dinners. This year, we celebrated with friends and family as over 200 residents, loved ones, and staff gathered for a delicious Thanksgiving turkey dinner in both our Assisted Living and Memory Care. It was all-hands-on-deck during the day as our staff prepared the decorations, set the tables, and helped assist some of our residents into their finest attire for the big event. Our chefs cooked away throughout the day in preparation for the big feast as the aroma of home cooking and classic holiday dishes spread through the halls, leaving all in mouth-watering anticipation for the evening’s meal. As the night wound down over the final bites of pie and sips of wine and coffee, another year of priceless family memories was added to our books.
These winter months are a novelty of sorts, and each year our community’s traditions grow all the more special. If there is one thing the merry season reminds us of time and time again, it is the importance of being thankful for our blessings and those we have been blessed with. As the classic Christmas jingle goes… “For the holidays you can’t beat home sweet home”.
